Cleft Lip Prevention

Overweight mothers-to-be have an increased risk of giving birth to a child with a cleft lip of cleft palate compared to normal-weight pregnant women. Swedish researchers found that being obese was associated with a 30 percent increased riek, and they estimate maternal obesity accounts for 23 percent of all cases of cleft lip and cleft palate.

Cleft lip is an abnormality in which the lip does not completely form. The degree of severity varies from a slight notch in the lip to a severe opening from the lip through the nose.
