1. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Rhoald Dahl. A Dahl classic that every child should read. Under ten is the ideal time to have this book read to you, read it with a parent, or read it yourself – or all three! Best read ion the age of magic.
2. Captain Underpants Books – Dav Pilkey. These books have one of those titles that make parents and teachers cringe, but the reality is that they key right in on the interests and sense of humor of children, and get them to read. Anything that does that is a list-topper.
3. Flat Stanley – Jeff Brown. Travelling and having adventures, and being loved by kids everywhere. Teachers love these fun books, too, and recommend them – in fact, base curriculum and projects specifically on them!
4. Charlotte’s Web – E.B. White. That fabulous pig and his spider, a timeless kids’ classic.
5. Matilda – Rhoald Dahl. The man does know how to create timeless children’s stories. This one continues to thrill generations.
6. Chronicles of Narnia Series – C.S. Lewis. The movie has brought this piece back around, although it never really went away. Fantasy and imagination, brilliant worlds to explore.
7. Harry Potter – J.K. Rowling. Around the ages of 9 or 10 are good times to introduce these grossly popular novels, allowing the children to grow with the characters and subsequent books.
8. Skellig – David Almond. This book is considered one of the best of the last decade for young readers.
9. Little House Series – Laura Ingalls Wilder. The Little House series is historical and educational, as well as entertaining. It’s a great introduction to our country’s early roots.
10. Stig of the Dump – Clive King. This highly recommended book has not been out of print since it was first published in 1963, and that means something indeed. Loner Barney discovers Stig from the Stone Age and together they have tandem adventures as they experience and learn about each other’s times. It’s a great story for boys and girls alike, but a particularly good choice for those boys who are tough to get reading.
